Nicknames: Ned to family, Nate at school
Age: 15
Year: 5
Gender: Male
House: Slytherin
Blood Status: Muggleborn, with no history of magical ancestors whatsoever

When You Were YoungFamily: Charles Clarke, age 40, postal worker (Muggles); Sarah Randolf Clarke, age 36, nurse (Muggles); Margaret “Peggy” Diane Clarke, age 18, British expatriot and current resident of San Francisco (Muggle); John “Jack” Robert Clarke, age 13, student (Muggle)
Personality: Nate is a very patient and kind boy on the outside, always polite and willing to take anything that someone could dish out at him. His teachers see him as an underachiever because of his silence in class, although his grades remain in a high average range. He is not a very curious person as he learned early in his life that sticking his nose into other people’s business would get him in trouble. In fact, he does not do much of anything that would be considered out of line, always worried that somehow his parents will find out and lord it over him during the summer.
Underneath the many-layered shell of politeness that Nate has built up, he is secretly angry and frustrated with both his family and his housemates for the way they treat him. With parents who resent him for being a wizard and classmates who hate him for being Muggleborn, he cannot win for losing. He wonders if he will ever fit into either world and this distresses him greatly. However, he silently tucks back the anger as he is not a very violent person at heart and doesn’t have it in him to hurt even those who hurt him. He continues to work hard, instead, and does everything he can to get by. He is actually quite clever when he sets his mind to something, but he hides the extent of his intelligence to keep from having yet another thing to be bullied for.
If Nate were to describe himself in three words, he would say that he is well-behaved, diligent, and average. He doesn’t have a very high opinion of himself and never has. He hopes one day that someone will give him reason to feel differently, although he thinks that it is a pipe dream not worth wasting time on. He has a lot of issues with learning to be laid-back, even around his friends, although once he has developed a liking to someone he is much more likely to speak his mind. One of the things he is most outspoken about is his dislike of snobbery among students. He doesn’t understand why having magic in your bloodline is any different than it appearing randomly; in fact, he feels like Muggleborns are more special because it is as if they are chosen. He can’t talk about these things with his housemates, though, of course.
History: Edward (or Ned, as his family calls him) is the middle child in an average-sized middle class family. He was born three years after his sister Peggy, who was a very easy child, causing his mother (still only 21) to be flustered and unsure of how to deal with her fussy, colicky newborn son. She soon adapted, however, and luckily her second son Jack was another happy, healthy baby. Ned was always viewed as a difficult child because of his rocky infancy, but he slowly grew up to be a very dependable, even-tempered child. Despite this, Charles and Sarah Clarke were shocked when their eldest son received a letter from a school of magic. It was viewed almost as a willful form of rebellion on his part, although he had no say in the magic he developed as he grew older. Even when their daughter Peggy jumped ship to America illegally at the age of 16, it only made “Ned”’s (or Nate, as he came to be known at school) life harder, creating an image of Jack as the family’s golden boy.
Upon arriving at Hogwarts, Nate’s main goal was to prove that he was a good son and not a bad seed. For this reason, he was devastated when he was sorted into Slytherin, a house regarded as dark and evil by many of the students in the grades above. Little did he know that it was his pure ambition to prove himself as an upstanding boy that landed him in the house of the cunning. He soon learned that he was not welcome in the snake pit, and he was ridiculed early on for his Muggle heritage. He has been physically and verbally bullied throughout his years at Hogwarts, but he takes each insult and kick without a word, to prove that he can be the perfect son and student. He makes friends in other houses; mostly they are other Muggleborns who feel out of place in a world of magic.
