Down By the Water

Renee shook her head. "Nu-uh, your family is the weird one."

"No it isn't!" Celeste pouted. "I'm not the one who doesn't keep their food cold!"

"Well I've never met anyone who has a...." she paused. "Frige?"

"Fridge," Celeste corrected. "And you don't??" She looked genuinely baffled.

"No I don't," she glanced around the room again, thinking that muggles were very strange beings.

"Where do you live?" Celeste asked suspiciously.

"What does where I live have to do with it?"

"I'm trying to figure out if you live in some sort of weird... Amish community or something."

Renee blinked. "A what community?" she asked in confusion, having never heard the word before.

"Amish? You know, they don't use anything with electricity because of their religion."

Renee shook her head slowly. "No... we're not religious," she stumbled over the word. And then she frowned. "Elec-is-ty?"

"Okay, now you're just kidding with me," Celeste said. "There is no way you can't know what electricity is."

"I don't know what it is," she protested. "I might have heard it before, but I don't think so," she gave a troubled frown. Muggles and their silly words.

"I don't think you are human," Celeste said, frowning.

Renee blinked. "I am so, we just don't have all this...weird stuff."

"Everyone has this stuff," Celeste said. "Are you sure you're okay?"

"Why wouldn't I be okay?"

"Electricity is a sign of a modern society. You've lived in first world countries, right?"

Renee nodded slowly.

"Then why do you not even know what it is? Is this some sort of prank?" Celeste looked genuinely baffled.

"No it's not a prank, I might have heard it before, but, no one has really explained to me what it is?"

Celeste blinks. "It keeps your lights on and your home appliances and stuff on."

"Ohhh, is that what turns the lights on? Weird."

"You never knew that?" Celeste asked, frowning. "What did you think it was?"

Renee shrugged. "I don't know, they just sort of turned on magically."
