Lucy and Lyall

Lyall kept herself isolated to the back of the group of first years, who were mostly chatting away with others they had either already known or had met on the train aside from some quieter ones much like herself. She looked around her as the doors to the hall opened and they all walked in, taking in the sight. Her mum had told her about what it looked like but hadn't done the room any justice in her description.

Lucy walked into the great hall and glanced up at the roof, it was like see-through. It reflected the sky above. She was walking sort of new the back on her own, Lucy could be very shy around people she didn't know and it took her a while to become comfortable around them, that and the fact that she enjoyed being on her own sometimes. Lucy looked around the hall and at the different houses. The teacher who was Transfiguration teacher and had introduced herself as Professor McGonagall stopped them. Lucy looked at the middle of the front of the hall, there was a chair, and a hat. Smiling Lucy looked at the hather parents had told her quite alot about Hogwarts and her brother had also.

The group stopped near the front of the hall and Lyall looked at the hat that was sitting on a stool there. The Sorting Hat if her memory was correct. Her mum had told her it sang a song before sorting all the first years into their houses. And as it turned out her mum hadn't lied to her, which Lyall didn't expect to happen anyway, but one could never be sure.

The sorting hat sang some odd song that Lucy found quite amusing, Professor McGonagall unrolled some scroll and started calling names, they put the hat on their head and the hat gave them a house. Lucy wondered how the hat chose houses cause she somehow doubted it jsut yelled the first house that came into it's. She watched the sorting slightly interested but at the same time not really.

As she halfway listened to the singing hat, Lyall frowned slightly as it occurred to her that her last name was very close to the beginning of the alphabet. Then the singing stopped and the professor started to call their names to get sorted. She frowned more when it was her turn quickly. She didn't like how everyone was watching and waiting. It was annoying. She sat down on the stool with the hat on her head. It said something she didn't catch and then called out her house. Slytherin. She got up and walked to that table, sitting near the end, since there were fewer people there.

Lucy's name was called sometime near the end because it started with P which is kind of near the end of the Alphabet, she turned her head tothe Professor's table when her name was called as she had thought she'd felt someone looking at her, one teacher caught her eye, he looked for want of a better word slightly scarey, shaking her head at herself Lucy walked towards the stool and placed the hat on her head while she listened to it talk, it seemed to want to put her in every house to which Lucy scowled at it and told it if it put her in Hufflepuff or Gryffindor she would feed it to something fearsome and make it look like an accident. To which the hat dicided to put her in Slytherin which suited the girl perfectly well and she went and sat at the less crouded end of the table.

Lyall waited as the rest of the kids got sorted after her. It seemed to drag on a bit, so she looked around the table at her new housemates for a moment, before looking around the hall at the rest of the people. Most of the older kids seemed bored, and Lyall supposed it was because they'd been through this a few times before.

Lucy bored was swinging her foot waiting for the sorting to finish, she accidently kicked the underside of the table and swore. "Ow frick." She said rubbing her foot and half falling onto the edge of the table, her head hit the table with a slight clunk frowning she sat up again and rubbed her head. "Stupid table." She scowled at it. "All your fault."

Lyall looked over as one of the people nearest her hit the table. She bit her lip for a moment, debating with herself to ask if they were okay or not. "Um..." she said quietly, wondering if the girl would even hear her, "are you ok? You hit the table pretty hard..."

"No," Lucy said rubbing her head. "Tables are kinda hard." She frowned and sighed looking around the hall, she wondered what her dad would say if he realised that she'd just made a total idiot of herself on her first day. She shrugged realising that she didn't really care. "I'm Lucy," She said to the girl who had asked her the question. "Lucy Prince."

"Yeah..." Lyall muttered, "that's what I was thinking..." She was quiet for a minute when the girl introduced herself. Lyall ran her fingers through her hair once. "Lyall Damen," she replied softly. Sighing mentally she decided that this shyness thing was getting ridiculous and she would never have any friends if she kept it up, although....She then mentally shook her head, banishing the thought.

Lucy nodded her mind reeling to see if she knew the name, she hated when her mind did that, it was something her parents had taught her because they only wanted her to be freinds with people who have 'pure' blood, like anyone did have pureblood, the pureblood families jsut claimed they did somewhere along the line someone must have been a squib or married a muggle or Merlin knows what else. "You're a halfblood arent you?" Lucy asked hoping she didn't seem rude but her inner pure-bloodness wouldn't leave her alone until she asked.

Lyall shrugged. "Yeah," she answered. "I am." It didn't matter to her. Her mum had told her all about the different blood statuses when she was younger and she didn't care if there were some people -those supposed purebloods- who thought they were better than everyone else. She was happy with the dad she had, even if he couldn't do magic like her or her mum.

Lucy nodded. "Kay, I'm Pureblood but I won't hold that against you, Muggle Born predujuices and stuff are stupid." She sighed and saw that the sorting had finished, some dude with a big white beard whom her parents grately disliked and whom was also called Dumbledore stood up and started babbling about something or other. "The wizarding world would well die out if pureblood families just married other purebloods and we're kind of all related to each other which is just...odd..."

Lyall just nodded, unable to think of something to say. Finally it was time to eat, which was great since she was getting hungry. She and Lucy talked a little more, and Lyall thought that maybe she had made her first friend at Hogwarts, and if so, that was fast.

Lucy helped herself to chips and some meat but stayed away from the green stuff, she wasn't a big fan of green stuff but knew she would have to eat it sometime. Her parents werealways telling her she had to eat more to which Lucy replied. "I eat Leatuce, that's green." She contonued talking to Lyall and it seemed that they had become freinds, which was good.

After dinner they all got up and the prefects led the first years to their respective common rooms. The Slytherin one wasn't too far from the Great Hall, being in the dungeons. They learned the passwords and all went inside to get ready for bed and classes the next day since it was late.

Lucy yawned and got ready for bed. Getting into bed she pulled the cover over her.

Lyall didn't fall asleep quite as quickly as she would have liked, but still felt rested when she woke up the next morning. She wasn't sure how she felt about having classes soon, and so didn't think about it. Instead she focused on getting ready for them and getting all the knots out of her hair, since it seemed to have a mind of its own while she slept and got tangled like mad. Stupid long hair. One day she was just going to cut it short and be done with it.

Lucy woke up the next morning still slightly tired and went to have a shower, the hot water woke her up a little which was good. Yawning she got dressed and pulled a brush through her hair before chucking the brush into her suitcase where it would most likley get lost under a pile of random junk. She yawned again and rubbed her eyes.

"Morning," Lyall said to Lucy, who still looked half asleep at the moment. The other girls in the dorm were starting to get up and move around getting ready. Lyall finished getting ready before the rest of them and left for breakfast to find a near empty table. She sat near where she had the night before and got something to eat.

"Morning," Lucy yawned to Lyall as she walked out of the classroom, a few minutes alter Lucy followed and then sat next to the girl at the Slytherin table. She grabbed a peice of toast and poured herself a glass of milk.

Sometime in the middle of breakfast the two got their schedules for classes. Lyall looked it over, memorizing it as soon as she looked. It would make things easier if she didn't have to go pulling it out after every class. They had Potions first.

Lucy looked at her timetable. "Potions," She said more to herself then to whoever was lsitening when she randomly said random comments to herself. She put her timetable into her bag and finished eating her toast before grabbing another peice, after eating that and drinking her milk she was finished with breakfast.

Lyall finisihed eating just as Lucy did so she said, "Want to go ahead and head to the class since we're both done eating? We wouldn't want to be late on our first day after all. Plus getting there early insures we get the seats we want and not the rejected leftover ones unless the professors assigns seats, although that's not likely...." She trailed off, realizing she was talking really fast and a lot. At a more normal pace she asked "DId you get a word of that?"
