I frowned and wished that I hadn't let something silly and everyday like this make me forget my manners. "I'm sorry, Lily, you know I don't do that often. I'm just frustrated is all." I saw her pack her book away and smiled. "Don't know why it's girls we're always comparing with animals, you've all got much more common sense than we do." I considered whether or not to acknowledge her last statement and decided that with Lily, not answering was just as telling to her as an answer either way. "I tried to talk him, in a way. Pointless, though." I nearly jumped four feet into the air when a third year boy came in through the portrait hole and I scolded myself for being so on edge. "I guess you'll be going up now, then," I said to Lily, noting that her homework was finished and she had no reason to be hanging about with me.

I flicked my bangs from my eyes only to brush them back down in front of them, a habit I had picked up over the years. "You didn't deny coming over here to annoy me," I said with a little laugh. "And fellow Gryffindor or not, I bet you don't even know my name."

Without giving him time to respond, I pushed up from leaning on the wall. "Well, I had best be going. Things to do, people to talk to. I would say nice talking to you, but it wasn't very much, since really it was pointless chatter."

Then I walked away from the wall and started my way up the stairs, preparing a story in my head to tell my friends, since, being as nosy as they were, they would ask what the supposed talk was all about. Sighing to myself I wondered why I put up with them sometimes.

Lily smiled slightly, "Yeah I suppose I am." She stood up and brushed some random dirt of her uniform. yawning she slung her bag over her shoulder. "Remus just keep trying to talk to him until he'll listen, he'll eventaully get bored of you trying to talk to him and will listen." She pulled a hand through her hair yawning once again. "Night Remus, I should get to bed before I fall alseep down here, which is not really a good thing," She smiled brefily and walked up to the girls dorm dumping her bag on the floor before she changed and got into bed.


Downstairs Sirius stood there absolutly amazed, what had just happened then? He frowned in slight annoyance and disbelief and started to walk up the stairs. Had she just...she had.... Ugh. Sirius who had rarely heard the word no when it came to girls was not taking getting rejected well. He half stormed up the stairs while still keeping his cool composiour a frown marrying his face. Zoe was not in the common room when he got there so he supposed she had gone to bed, he flopped down on a chair next to Remus. "Ugh," Was the first thing he said.

I watched as Lily pushed her hand through her hair and wondered if I'd ever take any of the advice she gave. Lily was the type that always had a quiet, helpful opinion for those who really needed it, and loud, belligerent ones for anyone who had their head too far up their own arse to see, like James. Speaking to Sirius AGAIN, renewing that painfully awkward teetering moment of uncertainty, would certainly be the death of me if I attempted it. Then again, I'd just said that Lily had more sense than the rest of us put together, hadn't I? Oh well. By the time I'd thought to ask her if it was really such a good idea, she had disappeared up the stairs into the girls' dorms.

A few minutes later, during which I had only managed two pages of the Dumas novel I was reading (blame it on distraction) I looked up to find Sirius sulking into the common room, dropping onto the sofa with a defeated flop that decidedly did not suit him. "Ugh," he said, if that could be considered saying, as it wasn't exactly a word. I frowned at him.

"What's wrong, Pads? Don't tell me you got points off while you were out. Or detention again. There's only so many times I can put a good word in for you with the professors, you know. At some point, it stops being good enough that you're my mate and they'll be hanging you by your thumbs in the dungeons." I tried to joke a little, hoping to bring a smile to his face. It was strange to see Padfoot, usually so vibrant, moping as if he'd just lost his best friend. Which of course he hadn't; said best friend was upstairs and there was a 99.9% probability that he was either plotting, brooding, or snoring like a great grizzly bear.

I walked through the school to the common room, slowly, stalling reaching the common room, and later the dorms which meant a million questions for me from my friends. I reached it and gave the portrait the password to get in. The portrait swung open and I stepped in, noting that very few people still lingered about. I debated hanging around a bit before heading to the dorm, but decided against it when I noticed that Sirius Black had somehow beaten me to the room. I was still annoyed at him. I walked up the stairs to the dorm and was immediately yanked over to Emma's bed where the two looked at me and said, "Talk," at the same time. "There's nothing to say," I started. "Oh, don't give us that," Emma stated, "you were talking to Sirius Black, the Sirius Black. There's something to say. What were you talking about?" I internally groaned. "Nothing, now drop it." They gave me looks that said I was going to talk or they would annoy me to death. "Tomorrow guys," I said, "I promise. Now leave me alone." They both frowned, and sometimes I swear they should be twins, but agreed nonetheless.

Sirius groaned again. "No I didn't lose any points, or even get a detension. And I'm sure youcan keep pulling me out of trouble or well Dentenion not trouble and anyway they can't hang me by my thumbs that is illigle." he was babbling again. "Can't believe it..." He muttered to himself then looked back up to Remus who was looking confused. "Had no interest what so ever," he murmered. "None what so ever," He sighed. "Just ah...ugh,"

Lily rolled over in her bad and shot up remembering her Charms assingment, she didn't remember putting it in her bag, "Lomus," Liting her wand up and emptied the contence of her bag onto her bed, rumaging through it, sighing I got out of bed and doned my robes over my Pj's not bothering to change out of them, walking down to the common room I heard snippets of people in their dorms conversations. "I'll give you this one for-" "But I didn't do anything it was-" She continued past the doors and rolled her eyes at a conversation. "Sirius Black the Sirius Black," Getting to the common room she walked over to where she had been working before to find her assingment on the floor. "Had no interest what so ever, None what so ever, Just ah...ugh," Black's voice said. Lily picked up her assingment and looked over to see a disgruntled Sirius and a confused Remus. "Who had no interest Black? Get rejected for the first time in your life?" She asked him wipping the dirt or her Charms work. "Zoey Walker," Come the muffled reply.

Understanding started to sink in when Lily reappeared and questioned Sirius. The words from his mouth, “Zoey Walker,” made perfect sense in that everything was always about a girl. What didn’t make sense was his insistence that this girl didn’t want to have anything to do with him. Had that happened lately? Scratch that, had that happened ever? It was against the natural order of things, really. Usually it was one girl or another chasing after Sirius, and he alternated between having a mild interest or not giving the girl the time of day; this was usually controlled by how good-looking the girl was and how jealous all the other blokes would get over her. Well, all the other blokes minus we three Marauders: Peter seemed to be comfortable with the idea that he had no chance with the kind of girls who liked Sirius, James was perpetually after Lily, and as for myself....well, I suppose now he knew the reason, but I’d never shown much interest in all the females who seemed to flock around our Padfoot.

“I’m sure she’s just being coy,” I said regretfully, knowing that the chances of any girl besides Lily resisting Sirius were slim to none. When Sirius looked at me balefully, I clarified my statement, “I mean, she must be playing hard to get. Not the first time it’s happened. Right, Lily?” I asked, looking to her to agree with me, although that was probably wishful thinking.

Keeping to their word, Emma and Millie didn't bring up the topic again, but they wouldn't let me go without talking about something.Finally, somewhat much later they finally stopped, and went to bed. With a semi-relieved sigh I changed in to my pajamas and went to my own bed, laying back and just staring at the ceiling for a bit, until I fell asleep.

"Hate to break it to you Black," Lily said pushed her vivid hair out of her face. "But you're not the center of the universe and not everyone has to like you," She shrugged. "So actaully she could be not in the slightest bit interested in you." Lily smiled again glancing back down at her Charms assingment that was still covered in dust, how dusty can one thing get by sitting on the floor for like half an hour? It was unbelievable. "Zoey...she's a fourth year isnt she? Yeah," Lily run a hand through her hair and giving up on wiping the dust off pulled out her wand to magic it off.

Sirius' mouth fell open in disbelief at what Lily had said. "Impossible," He muttered. "That goes against...it goes against Nature," He frowned thinking it over. "Impossible," He said again, Lily rolled her eyes at him, "Yes fourth year," He muttered and looking at Remus, "It's impossible right? You're not just pulling my leg saying she's being hard to get?" He looked frantic as if the continueing of the world depended on what Remus said.

I was, internally, more flustered than I'd been in a long time. There was Lily, the voice of reason but also determined to make Sirius learn he was not the center of the universe. That should be my job, really, but I couldn't exactly tell him he wasn't amazing when everything I believed was the opposite. Glancing back and forth between Lily, who was charming the dust from a paper, and Sirius, who looked as if he might hyperventilate if his inborn suaveness wasn't reassured, I wondered once again how I managed to be set down in the middle of Gryffindor -- how we three were all so different but somehow, a hat had told us we were the same, that we had something in common. I would have gone on thinking about it, and maybe even written about it, but Sirius was turning a shade of purple that managed to make him look marginally less attractive than usual and I didn't think he'd wait much longer.

"I....I don't know, Sirius. Maybe she...I dunno. Maybe she doesn't like boys, although I doubt that. Or maybe you're just...you know....not her type?" I shrugged; what did I know about girls? I'd tell him anything if it would make him feel better and stop looking like his entire life purpose was falling out from under him. "Just like you're not Lily's type," I added, showing him that it had happened before and it was not the end of the world.

I turned over in bed for the millionth time and gave up on it. I wasn't getting back to sleep any time soon it seem. With a huff I stared up at the ceiling, rather bored for a moment, before sitting up. It was getting later, so hopefully the common room would be deserted by now. Sighing, I got up from bed, and walked out of my dorm, stopping when I heard voice in the common room. "Yes fourth year," I barely heard a voice I'd rather not hear say, "It's impossible right? You're not just pulling my leg saying she's being hard to get?" My eyebrows pulled together. What were they...? "I....I don't know, Sirius. Maybe she...I dunno. Maybe she doesn't like boys, although I doubt that. Or maybe you're just...you know....not her type?" someone else said, I couldn't place the voice right off due to some of my previous tiredness coming back. "Just like you're not Lily's type." \Deciding to pretend I had heard nothing, and with a perfectly timed real yawn I walked into the common room. I was still looking for a way to waste some time until I could fall asleep after all, and laying in bed just wouldn't work.

"You're filling his head with Nonsence Remus," Lily said frowning slightly, "It's about time he realises not everyone is going to fall for him, time Potter figured that out too actaully..." She added shaking her head, she laughed when Zoey walked into the room and Black jumped and dived behind Remus. "It's a wonder," She said. "Why anyone likes you in the first place Black," When her charms work was dust free she pocketed her wand and made sure her charms work was seculey in a pocket. She wasn't really tired anymore and sat down in a chair oposite the boys.

Sirius whose confidence had disapeared with what Evans was saying jumped when he saw Zoey walk into the room, he dived behind Remus looking from behind his head. "Do you think she saw me?" He asked nerviously. "It's a wonder," Evans said. "Why anyone likes you in the first palce Black," Sirius blushed slightly. "You know," Evans added. "Da ja vo here, I swear Potter has done that before,"

I suddenly found myself using my body as a shield for Sirius to hide behind. "I disagree, Lily, I think Sirius is very likable," I said neutrally. I felt alarmed, though, when she mentioned that she had seen James acting the same way Sirius was now. If Padfoot got to the level that Prongs was, all hope was lost for all of us. Everyone always seemed to think that James and Sirius were a lot alike, but being around them so much, I knew it wasn't like Sirius to be so concerned over something. It upset me a bit but I simply chose to laugh as Zoey walked all the way into the room. I raised a hand in greeting and gave her a terse, "Hello." It wasn't right to be rude to someone, even if they were the last person you wanted around. I batted at Sirius's head as he kept popping it up over my shoulder to see what was going on.

I ran my fingers through my hair, with another small yawn, as I walked in the room. "Hello," said the person who's voice I didn't recognize earlier. I looked over to see Remus Lupin. "Hullo," I said back to him, noticing Lily was also in the room. "Can't sleep either?" I asked her, purposefully ignoring Sirius, since despite his "best efforts" I could see him. I sat in the chair nearest her.

"COurse you do Remus," Lily said. "You're his freind." She watched as Zoey came over and sat on a chair near her, "Well I was nearly there then I remembered i'd left my charms homework and then I wasn't tired again," She smiled slightly and out of the corner of her eye saw Sirius trying to act causually stand up and sit back down in a chair next to Remus. It was quite amusing. She laughed when he tripped.

Sirius kept looking up behind Remus' head and then diciding that it would be safe to sit back down he tried to act casuelly to get up but right before sitting down he got his foot caught on a chairleg and feel face forward onto the rug. He heard Lily laugh and got up red faced and walked out of the common room to the boys dorm.

I felt a surge of sympathetic embarrassment as I watched Sirius topple to the floor and decided that the world had been turned on its ear. I had always thought the day that Sirius Black lost his cool would be the day that everything went pear-shaped and people started quacking like ducks and wearing shoes on their ears. But here he was, tumbling over himself because of a girl. I was deeply disappointed to say the least. As he scrambled out of the room and up to the dorms I shook my head and glanced over at the girls. "Sorry about him," I said, staring into the armrest of one of the chairs to avoid looking at Zoey, "he's a little off tonight due to....erm...extenuating circumstances." I grabbed up the book that I had set aside when Sirius entered the room and flipped furiously to a random page. I stared hard at the letters but my mind couldn't quite manage to make words of them. Finally, I gave up. "Couldn't you have just pretended to like him?" I asked, looking pointedly at the girl who had most recently entered. There was a good chance that an exclamation like that would only confuse her but honestly, it was going to drive me as batty as it had driven Sirius. "He's lost his mind now."

I raised an eyebrow when Sirius fell to the floor, moving from behind Remus finally, and then embarrassed with his fall leave. What's got him all spazzy? "Sorry about him," Remus said, and I noticed he was staring into the armrest of one of the chairs rather than looking at us as he spoke, "he's a little off tonight due to.... erm...extenuating circumstances." I made a small unconcerned noise; because really it was no importance to me really that he was spazzing over something. I chatted idly with Lily, still not tired enough to go back to bed when suddenly Remus said, "Couldn't you have just pretended to like him?" causing me to jump slightly in my chair and look over at him to find him looking at me. " He's lost his mind now." I stared at him, both eyebrows raised. "Are you saying that I'm the cause of that? That's utterly ridiculous," I replied, shaking my head. "I've heard enough around the school to know that Sirius Black doesn't get all flustered like that when it comes to girls, so why would he get all bothered over my lack of any interest in him earlier?" I gave Remus a questioning look.

"Because Sirius Black," Lily said with a smile. "Has never actaully been rejected before, should do down in history." She was still smiling from Black losing his cool, "Him losing his cool should aswell, that's two amazing things in one day, probably makes up for the other five years where it has been lacking." She shook her head in amusement and glanced at Remus who had a slight pained expression on his face. "Don't worry Remus, he'll have forgetten it by the morning when something else catches his attension," Lily stiffled a yawn and brushed her hair behind her ears it have fallen down again, most of the people had left the common room now, gone up to their dorms to get some sleep, their were only a handful of students still down their mostly older ones finishing off their homework that was due the next day.

"Well, I would hope so, but you don't know Sirius like I do. He tends to obsess over things," Remus replied, remembering the time that Sirius had eaten nothing but Christmas pudding for two weeks. "He's like James in that way, I guess. Never really knows when to give up on things." He found himself smiling at Lily over he little joke, despite the worry and frustration he was feeling. To be honest, he would really have every girl in school reject Padfoot, but he could't exactly say that, could he?

"Lovely, so he's decided to obsess over me, just because I rejected him?" Zoey said. Then she made a face. "I never actually rejected him in anything, because all he did was come over to me, say hi, and then asked what I was doing. I just didn't answer his questions. Last time I checked that didn't add up to being rejected." Then she yawned, getting slightly tired, as it was rather late at night now.

Lily sighed as she thought of James. He really was an annoying idiot half of the time. Or more likely, all of the time. He just didn't seem to get that she didn't like boys who constantly annoyed the hell out of her. No-one did, they were annoying. "That's Sirius," Lily said with a slight eyeroll. "He takes you not answering his questions as being rejected."

Sirius was in his room sitting on his bed sulking. He did not like being rejected. He did not like making a fool of himself. He did not like when someone laughed at him and not because he did something funny. He did not like it at all. And it had all happened. So he sulked and muttered and grew very annoyed not even James when he made his way up to the common room could lighten his room. "Just forget her Pads," He said sitting down on his bed. "She's just a girl." "You don't seem to stop sulking about Evans," Sirius muttered back still feeling sour.

Remus shrugged his shoulders at the two girls. "Does that mean you weren't rejecting him?" he asked, hoping that she would be another girl like Lily, who would rather date a mole rat than date Sirius Black. Girls like that were hard to come by, but he was happy when he did find them. "I mean, is he just completely repulsive to you?" Remus asked, wondering how anyone could really think of Padfoot that way. Sure he could be a bit annoying and slightly random, and maybe even a little self-absorbed, but there was still something about him that no one else had, even James.

"It doesn't matter, does it though? If he's meant to be forgetting all about it tomorrow," Zoey said getting up from the chair she'd been settled in. "Now, if neither of you mind, I'm going to head up to bed. It's late and there are classes to deal with." Without waiting for either to say a word she turned and walked up the stairs to the girl's dorms, thankful to be getting to sleep finally. She may not have been tired before, but she was now.

"Seeya," Lily said watching her walk out. She shook her head with a slight sigh and leaned back on the chair she was sitting on. "Boys," She said with another shake of her head. "Sometimes..." She sighed glancing at Remus who still looking slightly torn up. Though from what Lily could tell it didn't seem to be because Sirius had had a major breakdown, he was having his own problem. Lily wanted to ask but thought that it would be rude too so held her tongue. With a yawn she said. "I suppose I should be going off to bed. Night Remus."

Remus simply nodded to Lily as she went up to bed. He had noticed her looking at him a bit strangely and wondered if there was some strange way that she could know what he was really worried about. That didn't seem possible, but you could never really tell with Lily. She was just the kind of person that sometimes knew things that she shouldn't. Muttering, he went upstairs to find James and Sirius bickering over something.

"Lily is different, Padfoot, and you know it. She's not just some random girl. She's THE girl," James was saying.
