Changing World

Knowing it was a lost attempt no matter what Lyssa couldn't help but say, "Cassie, please don't leave."

"I'm leaving, and you are not going to convince me otherwise Lyssa,"

"I know," Lyssa replied. "But I had to say it anyway, didn't I?"

Cassie shrugged, taking her case towards the door.

"Cass," Lyssa said. "You've forgotten to pack something."

Cassie turned, looking at her. "Yes?"

Lyssa got up from the couch and walked over to where Cassie was standing. Then she pushed something into Cassie's hand. "You forgot to pack the locket. Seeing as it was a gift from a best friend, there's no point in keeping it when that's gone." Then Lyssa walked back over to the couch again and curled back up.

"I don't want it," Cassie said and she threw it onto the bench. Where it landed next to the key that she had left there.

"Well, I sure as hell don't want it," Lyssa said sharply, the tears she'd been fighting the whole time springing to her eyes. "Do you think I want reminders of my own stupidity?"

"Throw it out then," Cassie said with a light shrug. "Because I don't want a reminder of what was a waste of my time." She continue pulling her case towards the door. It was somewhat heavy and wasn't the easiest thing to move.

"Cass," Lyssa said just before Cassie reached the door, "is this how I always made you feel?"

Cassie stopped for the moment, turning to look at Lyssa. "Yes," She answered simply.

Lyssa looked at Cassie for a moment, no longer about to hold back the tears as a few slide down her face. "Then why the fuck did you put up with me?"

Cassie shrugged. "I don't know," She said. "I really don't. It took Emma half ranting at me to realize it."

"Emma's a smart person."

"That she is." Cassie was at the door now.

"You're lucky to be her friend," Lyssa said, getting in a little more before Cassie was gone. "And I'll miss you being around, although I don't think that's mutual."

"No," Cassie said. "It probably won't be."

"It's sort of sad, you know, that we made it through all the shit that happened during the war, only to get here and have this happen."

Cassie looked at her. "It's long since due though. This should have happened before, or at the least, during the war."

"I have to disagree with you there, Cassie," Lyssa replied. "Were it not for your friendship I would probably be dead or in prison right now. But, you were there and you snapped me out of it......and what did I do to thank you? Absolutely nothing." She buried her head in her hands. A moment later Lyss looked back up, face wet from the tears that had fallen for a brief moment. "It's no wonder you're leaving... And I'm realizing all of this too freaking late to do anything about it."

Cassie said nothing, she was leaning on the door frame.

"Cass...please tell me someway to at least start fixing this."

"I've told you that. You can't fix it. It's too late for that."

"Let me try to! I won't be able to live with myself if I don't try to make at least some sort of amends. Please," Lyssa said. "Would you like me to get on my knees and beg you to let me? Because I will."
